Yes, professional musicians are not always treated well. But their response matters too.

Someone asked me recently to write a post about how a young music student could cross over to the professional world of performance, recording, etc. I have written about that in the past but really need to revisit that subject every year because things change very quickly. So here is my current take on it.
Of course it is highly illogical to wait until the beginning of a year to start making improvements to the way you live your life. So if you are one of those who thinks New Year’s resolutions are silly, I hear you. But one thing I have learned about life is that what is logically […]
A dozen years ago, I worked for Delta Airlines as a software programmer. I was a poor programmer by that point not because I could not do the work but speaking very frankly, I had lost all my drive for doing the work. I knew that I little hope of recovering my drive so on my two year anniversary (as soon as my contract would permit), I resigned and came home to work on a tiny internet business that was generating a very meager amount of money.
A few weeks ago, I wrote an article discussing how a performer handled a cell phone interruption. I told you I was going to make a series out of that example and am just now getting back to it.
Yesterday, the “smart” clock in our house changed to daylight savings time one week early. As a result, while I was getting ready, my wife rushed to inform me that we were running on the wrong time and hopelessly late for church. Nevertheless, we left as soon as we could and got to church maybe 30 minutes late. Almost as soon as I sat down, something embarrassing happened: my cell phone started ringing.
The internet is abuzz with this viral article from Huffington Post about Generation Y.
Not only is it great writing, but there is some real truth there and I
have a feeling it was used in many sermon illustrations this morning
(including my church).
For those who are looking for work, let me sort of tell you how the process works these days. Last week, we posted a job (office admin/customer service) on Monster.com. In 24 hours, about 100 resumes came in. The ad is running two weeks so I can expect another few hundred resumes at least.
I am a college football agnostic (meaning I fall asleep if I try to watch a game). I can’t remember the last time a college football game really held my interest (well OK, it was that Boise State/Oklahoma bowl game in 2007 which by the way can never be topped). While I am largely uninterested […]
I have a weakness for cake. I am sort of picky about it; what I really like is buying cake by the slice from a great bakery. This weekend, Marla and I were on a little trip and when we saw a bakery that looked promising, we went in.
I have to climb on a soapbox for a second and say I am tired of hearing
about how bad things are. Facebook is depressing. If you read Facebook,
you get the idea that the end of the world as we know it is imminent for
any number of reasons ranging from gun control to postmodernism to
super viruses.
