March 2025: A note from Greg
Back in 2019, I retired from professional music. I tried to let everyone know what was going on, but some didn’t get the message. In fact, I notice that a lot of people find their way here by searching on Google for “what happened to Greg Howlett?” or “Greg Howlett obituary.”
If you fall into that category, yes, I retired and am still retired. I am not dead however…
I have been remiss in keeping you up to date on my life and the life of my family. I wrote annual updates for a few years, and that sort of died a few years ago. So, let me catch you up.
Our children are grown up now:
- David is in the Air Force in Germany. His field is cyber security.
- Kelsey recently graduated from Purdue University and is the COO of our business (more on that in a second). She lives near us in Atlanta.
- Katelyn is less than a year away from graduating from the University of North Georgia with a degree in marketing.
- Zach is starting his sophomore year at the University of Georgia in the fall.
As far as Marla and I go, we do have a few changes. A year ago, we rented an apartment in a high-rise in Midtown, Atlanta to see if we would enjoy living in a city.
As it turns out, we did. So, we bought a house, and a month ago, we moved from our house in Monroe, GA to the middle of Atlanta (Inman Park). Yes, it is a big adjustment. We live in a walkable area (on the Beltline) and are loving our new life.
We also spend a lot of time in Utah these days. We opened a warehouse for our business in Utah a few years ago and live out there a few months each year. Skiing is one of those things that the entire family loves to do and we do a family ski trip there every year.
My time these days is usually focused on our business, which I started in 1999, ran parallel to my music career for many years, and have now returned to full-time.
The business has grown substantially over the past five years. As mentioned, Kelsey is now running a large part of it, and I am still very involved. I am also involved in a few business groups, both locally and nationally. I am far more connected in that world than I have ever been, and really enjoy that.
A lot of you want to know what I am doing in music. The answer? Not much. I started taking lessons again about six months ago with Kevin Bales, the teacher who influenced my music more than anyone over the past few decades. However, we travel a lot, and I have missed more lessons than I have attended. I actually have no idea what music looks like in my future, but I will admit it is not a priority right now.
I think that pretty much covers it. I hope all of you are doing well and continue to be grateful for your support over the years.
If you want to talk, I am always available here.
Best regards,
Greg
