Here is reality. Through history, music has often been taught by ear rather than by teaching musicians to read notes. Sure, there are some musicians that have more natural ability than others, but practically all of us can learn to play by ear just like we learn by reading notes. That is not to say that all of us will play by ear equally well, but that is true for playing by reading as well.
I am proof that you can play by ear without being born with a special gift. I never played by ear until after graduating from college.
